Our brains are wired for story. It has been said that we had story before we had oral language. It is a core part of how we have created meaning and connected with others for thousands of years. Today we are inundated with data and information; what we really need is more story.
Story is everywhere and we need more story, better stories,… not just at work to move our people and our work forward, not just at home to move our children and our relationships forward, but in our communities where we play, collaborate, support, and lead.
What stories are you swimming in? What stories are your co-workers and staff swimming in? Notice the stories that are told to you, and the ones you’re telling others, passing on, telling yourself. At The StoryEdge we consider Story Intelligence, in its broadest definition, to be a person’s ability to use story, or story knowledge, conceptually and linguistically to solve problems and/or evoke a response in others. Story is a tool, and we can all learn to use it more effectively.
Story Intelligence is about telling a good story, while reading the listeners and adjusting in the moment. It’s also about story listening; listening for what is being said, listening ‘between the lines’ and listening for what is not being said. Story Intelligence is about story crafting, story eliciting, story co-creating, story re-writing. It’s about storying the future… and so much more.
